Our Peer Coaches

I chose to participate because no one can identify with me more than my peers who go through the same things I do daily. Also, I want to be able to support someone the way I would want to be supported. The heaviness of having a patient’s absolute trust can be terrifying and inspiring at the same time.

I care about people and engage them in their problem-solving. I find it meaningful to connect with people early on, so that our interactions can be more successful/beneficial. I also really enjoy working with people who express gratitude. Gratitude is like fuel for me. So is laughter.

I I practice at the intersection of medicine and health psychology in order to support and empower oncology patients. Happiness and struggle are not optional and don’t have a schedule in a human life. We are created for connection and connection heals. I am humbled and privileged to confidentially walk with others on their journey.

I believe strongly that talking to a peer is helpful, even if only for a few minutes. No one knows each other better than a peer who may be going through something similar. Fun but serious applies in my day to day. We discuss some very heavy things in medicine and to know when it’s time to laugh is a good thing.

Through regular reflection and learning from others, I continue to adapt, achieving more personal satisfaction and harmony in my own life.  I've had the privilege of having deep conversations with residents about how they are adjusting to their roles as physicians. Serving as a peer to peer supporter combines these interests and experiences. 

It can be so helpful to have someone to talk to about work and its related stressors! I love developing relationships with my patients, staff and colleagues! We have  great crew here!

I was a residency director and mentored a couple hundred residents, many of whom I’m still connected to. When I reflected on what brings me joy in my work, mentoring and personal connection kept coming up. I’d like to bring that to others.

I'm drawn to the idea of supporting my teammates because life can be hard and sometimes you just need to speak with someone who understands ‘your world’

I grew up the son of a humble servant leader and I hope to carry on that tradition. I love bringing positivity, joy and thanksgiving to work. Everyday is a new day, your focus is to enjoy the journey along the way.

I have been mentored by great people during my career so I wanted to give back. Quality of care is a more important than all other factors in health care and quality is product of caring.

We all suffer the curse of being human – we are not perfect.  If I can look in the mirror and say I did the best I could, I am fine with myself regardless of outcome.  I have also learned that even in death, we can make a difference.  What we say or do, how we show up or the space we give, can all make a difference to a family, regardless of outcome.

Enjoy getting to know the patients and staff and doing the little extras that show them that you care about them. Active listening really is the key. You can say almost anything with a smile.
